Abstract

The Public Lot (St. Ann's Church Lot) Books collection is comprised of twelve oversize, bound volumes detailing the names and dates of the people buried in the public lots. Though they do not include as much biographical or operational information as other Green-Wood business documents, these books are valuable records of Green-Wood's permanent residents' names and where and when they were buried.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Public Lot (St. Ann's Church Lot) Books collection includes twelve oversize, bound volumes. Each volume is divided into several lot numbers (not chronological or numerical) and within each lot, entries are listed by grave number (again, this is not entirely chronological). Each handwritten entry includes the grave number, date(s), name(s), and some include the name/organization on the receipt. The lots are mostly open lots dedicated to either adults or children. Others belonged to specific churches or organizations. Each volume lists a basic table of contents on the first page with the lots included in that volume. A few of the books have a number of blank pages. In the box with the first volume is a folder containing information pertaining to St. Ann's Church.

The books are mostly in good condition, though the pages should be handled with care. They were all rebound fairly recently and most of the bindings are still intact and tight. Good preservation has been done on some pages, but many (especially in the final volumes (10, 11, 12)) were repaired with large amounts of tape that has made the pages' condition considerably more fragile. The edges of the pages in several volumes have deterioriated or torn.
