Scope and Contents of the Materials

The documents in this collection date from 1837 to 1934 and relate to the creation and incorporation of Green-Wood Cemetery. The documents were stored in the vault of the sub-basement of the Chase Manhattan Bank. The majority of the collection consists of indentures--legal documents reflecting a debt. Another portion of the collection consists of documents related to the general development and expansion of the Cemetery, including minutes of Executive Committee meetings related to financial debts, the creation of the Board, and purchases of plots of land.
