Collection Historical Note

Charlotte Amelia Hix (nee Stevenson) died on February 22, 1922 and was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery. In 1926, Green-Wood became the administrator c.t.a. of her estate. Charlotte's parents, Walter and Elizabeth Stevenson, died in 1847 and 1873, respectively. Charlotte had seven brothers and sisters: Mary, George, James, William, Richard, Susan, and Sarah, all of whom preceded Charlotte in death, except for Sarah. As Walter died intestate, Charlotte eventually inherited her father's legacy. Having no other living siblings, Charlotte left her estate, including three properties in the Bronx and Manhattan, to her sister Sarah Matilda Stevenson. Sarah left her estate (including the legacy from Charlotte) to Caroline Phillips Van Loon when she died in 1936. Caroline Phillips Van Loon eventually bought out Green-Wood's administratorship of Charlotte's estate in 1948.
