Scope and Contents: In 2002, Green-Wood’s Historic Fund rededicated New York City’s Civil War Soldiers’ Monument after a year of restoration, and launched the Civil War Project, an effort to identify and remember the Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery. When the project began, it was thought that 500 veterans were interred here, but after years of research that number has reached over 4,000.
2011 marked the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, which Green-Wood commemorated with Memorial Day events. These maps were prepared in April 2011 by Civil War Project volunteers and show the location of approximately 4,400 veterans’ graves. The maps were then used by volunteers to place flags and luminaries at the graves for the events.
The collection contains 41 maps showing 12 sections or zones of the cemetery. Original maps are contained in one bundle, measuring approximately 36 inches wide.
