The Register of Interment Books Series contains the daily records of all the interments that occurred at Green-Wood Cemetery in chronological order from September 5, 1840 until December 31, 1892. These books are a duplicate of another set of Register of Interment Books which are located in the administrative building at Green-Wood. The administrative building copies contain more complete burial information about interments from September 5, 1840 until December 31, 1937. The books are in poor/damaged condition. Many of the oversized leather books are covered in red rot, have tattered and brittle pages, ripped covers, and loose boards.
The Interment Books are used by the staff at Green-Wood to confirm vital information for interments. Register of Interment Books are the only source of vital information for Green-Wood's earliest burials. Green-Wood collected certain information about interments that many other cemeteries did not record and therefore these books hold important vital information that family members, genealogists, and historians might find of interest. Depending on the date of the burial, some earlier Interment Books did not have space to record certain information about the interment. Almost all of the Interment Books contain a grid that lists on each line, from left to right, across two pages the vital information for each burial. Most of the books will contain the interment date, interment number, name of deceased, lot number, section number/grave number, birthplace of deceased, age at death (years, months, and/or days old), marital status at time of death (Married, Single, or Widow), last known residence of deceased, place of death, cause of death, undertaker/funeral director, and remarks.
