Abstract

The Architectural Drawings and Blueprints collection contains over 150 separate series of mausoleum and vault designs, as well as blueprints for the design of the Green-Wood chapel and other historically significant buildings and monuments.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Architectural Drawings and Blueprints collection contains over 150 separate series of designs, each of which has one to around 20 individual drawings. Each series represents designs for a mausoleum or other architectural feature at Green-Wood Cemetery.

Most of the designs are for private family mausoleums, although the collection also includes blueprint materials for the historic Green-Wood chapel designed by Warren & Wetmore, alterations made to the Fifth Avenue gate, and plans for the mid-twentieth-century Columbarium. Other notable features in the collection include the Higgins mausoleum series, which contains photographs and early designs of the famous Battle Hill monument Altar to Liberty: Minerva by sculptor F. Wellington Ruxell. Many additional series may include more famous names in New York City history, such as those for the Cooper-Hewitt family and the Torrio family.

The majority of these drawings are printed on large blueprint paper, although there are a significant number of series that contain original drawings on tracing paper or drafting linen, as well as prints on Mylar, photocopy paper, or other reproduction materials. Many series also contain specifications documents—legal agreements between the architectural firm and the cemetery, which outline the plans, materials, and workman regulations for construction. In some cases, there is additional material, such as correspondence with lot owners and alternate mausoleum designs.

The collection’s dates range from the 1880s to the 1990s; the majority of the mausoleum designs were created between 1910 and 1930, at a time when it was widely popular among upper-class families to have a mausoleum or vault in which to inter their deceased relatives. Many architects of the time specialized in mausoleum design. Architectural firms that produced a large number of mausoleum designs in this collection include the Presbrey-Leland Monument Company, John Feitner Architects, and the Harrison Granite Company.

Researchers may wish to consult a specific series, which can give an interesting insight into the family in question, or they may wish to look at multiple series in the collection, in order to gain an example of the way construction and design aesthetics changed over time. The collection is a particularly valuable example of the way cemetery architecture developed in its golden years, particularly because many of the wealthiest and most prestigious New York families chose to be interred at Green-Wood.

The collection is currently stored in two locations—some material is in the Green-Wood archives, while many other blueprints are kept in the surveyor’s office of the administrative building. The container list has additional information on each item in this significant and highly variable collection, including notes on the date of designs, the architectural firm that created the drawings, and information on the size, condition, markings, and design features of each piece. All blueprint materials have been scanned and are digitally available; a preview of the image file is attached to each item. High-resolution images of each scan are available upon request.

The material is in varying condition, and embrittled drawings have been encapsulated in Mylar to ensure preservation.

The Green-Wood archives hold additional records acquired from the Presbrey-Leland Monument Company relating to Green-Wood Cemetery, and researchers may find it useful to consult this collection in conjunction with the Architectural Drawings and Blueprints.

Series 122: Garrison Mausoleum (Lots 31418-31421)

The Garrison Mausoleum is located in Lots 31418-31421 and was designed by Harrison Granite Company of 42 East 32nd Street, New York, New York. The plans were approved on various dates - all in 1903 - and through the months of May, June and July.

Details: All the general conditions of the workmanship, contractors, designs and materials to be used are noted in this document. Each area of the mausoleum and mausoleum piece is described in a separate section of this document.

Drawing Material: Document - typed legal size paper.

Materials Noted: granite, stone, glass, marble, slate, and bronze.

Notes/Markings: The cover page has a handwritten note on the top left corner; it is two words –one word is “for” and the other word is unclear. Page 4 has the mausoleum family name written in pencil under the heading name, and in pencil, “door lintel” is in place of the crossed out words, “front of frieze.” The document is signed by the architect and Mrs. Ellen Harrison. The back of the document has “Garrison copy for FBM” in green pencil.

Condition: Good. The document is creased and folded. Some of the typing is blurred, making it a little hard to read, but nothing is unreadable.

Item B: Front Elevation, 1903 June 6

Scale: ¾” = 1’

Details: This view of the front of the mausoleum entrance outlines the details on the front door, the columns and the gables roof. Three steps are shown leading up to the doorway. There are two Ionic columns on either side of the double doors. The detailed doors each have rectangles with vertical bronze rods which meet with a circle, and above that is a pattern of triangles inside a square. Above the doors on the lintel is the family mausoleum name engraved in raised axed letters. The gabled roof is made up of three slabs put together.

Condition: Very good. There is only very minor wear and tear along the edges of the blueprint.

Item D: Lot Plan, 1903 June 30

Scale: ¼” = 1’

Details: The bottom part of this plan shows the foundation and 10 shown posts that go above ground to seemingly surround the mausoleum plot. The brick foundation wall has a 3 foot elevation noted. The main plan is a large circle that outlines the entire mausoleum plot. There is a marked entrance way.

Notes/Markings: On the smaller diagram, the post that is shown underground has a note next to it that reads: “rough off square.” Inside the main diagram are detailed notes for the posts, drainage, steps, and rails.

Condition: Very good. The left side of the plan has some tears in it and there is very minor wear and tear along the bottom of the blueprint.

Item E: Composite - Elevation

Details: The bottom plan is the most detailed and has the below-ground foundation shown with two posts that are above ground on either side with a space in the middle. To the right side of the post that has the family name written on it is a rail leading to a small post. The top plan is fairly light and looks to be an aerial view of the top of the posts.

Item F: Ground Plan

Details: This plan looks to be a ground plan of the inner mausoleum. A lot of the figures and notes at the top of the plan have been smudged.

Notes/Markings: The entire drawing is covered in notes and markings.

Condition: Good. The plan itself is clear, but the left side of the document is torn and very frayed. The top of the plan has smudged notes, but they are still readable.

Item G: Plan, 1903 June 5

Scale: ¾” = 1’

Details: This plan shows the outline of the mausoleum from an aerial view. Two steps are noted with two column tops on either side of the doorway. Through the doorway is a foyer which opens up into the main mausoleum, which is split into three rectangles. The back wall has a smaller space for a window.

Size: 15.2” x 20.4”

Condition: Very good. There are staple holes along the left side of the plan and very minor tears visible along the bottom of the plan.

Item H: Transverse Section, 1903 June 5

Details: This view outlines the foundation depth with earth filling. The brickwork forming the building and gabled roof is also marked out.

Size: 15.3” x 20.5”

Item I: Side Elevation, 1903 June 5

Scale: ¾” = 1’

Details: There is one Ionic column shown from the top step to the base of the roof. The side wall is shown delineated by slabs for its construction. An air vent is noted at the top of the mausoleum. The base of the roof is also shown.

Item J: Rear Elevation, 1903 June 5

Scale: ¾” = 1’

Details: The back of the mausoleum is shown with slabs of concrete and a window in the middle-center of the back. The window has a bronze grille and ornate decoration above the bars. The back of the gabled roof is shown.

Condition: Very good. A small tear can be seen along the bottom of the plan and small staple holes are along the left side of the plan.

Item K: Longitudinal Section, 1903 June 5

Details: This sectional view shows 4 catacombs with the third one down having a note written in it that reads, “_____________ Garrison January 3, 1833 - July 8, 1902.” The catacombs have ornate handles on each end. In front of the catacombs are the entrance way and one Ionic column is noted. The sectional view of the roof is also shown. Earth filling is noted in the foundation area.
