Abstract

The Architectural Drawings and Blueprints collection contains over 150 separate series of mausoleum and vault designs, as well as blueprints for the design of the Green-Wood chapel and other historically significant buildings and monuments.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Architectural Drawings and Blueprints collection contains over 150 separate series of designs, each of which has one to around 20 individual drawings. Each series represents designs for a mausoleum or other architectural feature at Green-Wood Cemetery.

Most of the designs are for private family mausoleums, although the collection also includes blueprint materials for the historic Green-Wood chapel designed by Warren & Wetmore, alterations made to the Fifth Avenue gate, and plans for the mid-twentieth-century Columbarium. Other notable features in the collection include the Higgins mausoleum series, which contains photographs and early designs of the famous Battle Hill monument Altar to Liberty: Minerva by sculptor F. Wellington Ruxell. Many additional series may include more famous names in New York City history, such as those for the Cooper-Hewitt family and the Torrio family.

The majority of these drawings are printed on large blueprint paper, although there are a significant number of series that contain original drawings on tracing paper or drafting linen, as well as prints on Mylar, photocopy paper, or other reproduction materials. Many series also contain specifications documents—legal agreements between the architectural firm and the cemetery, which outline the plans, materials, and workman regulations for construction. In some cases, there is additional material, such as correspondence with lot owners and alternate mausoleum designs.

The collection’s dates range from the 1880s to the 1990s; the majority of the mausoleum designs were created between 1910 and 1930, at a time when it was widely popular among upper-class families to have a mausoleum or vault in which to inter their deceased relatives. Many architects of the time specialized in mausoleum design. Architectural firms that produced a large number of mausoleum designs in this collection include the Presbrey-Leland Monument Company, John Feitner Architects, and the Harrison Granite Company.

Researchers may wish to consult a specific series, which can give an interesting insight into the family in question, or they may wish to look at multiple series in the collection, in order to gain an example of the way construction and design aesthetics changed over time. The collection is a particularly valuable example of the way cemetery architecture developed in its golden years, particularly because many of the wealthiest and most prestigious New York families chose to be interred at Green-Wood.

The collection is currently stored in two locations—some material is in the Green-Wood archives, while many other blueprints are kept in the surveyor’s office of the administrative building. The container list has additional information on each item in this significant and highly variable collection, including notes on the date of designs, the architectural firm that created the drawings, and information on the size, condition, markings, and design features of each piece. All blueprint materials have been scanned and are digitally available; a preview of the image file is attached to each item. High-resolution images of each scan are available upon request.

The material is in varying condition, and embrittled drawings have been encapsulated in Mylar to ensure preservation.

The Green-Wood archives hold additional records acquired from the Presbrey-Leland Monument Company relating to Green-Wood Cemetery, and researchers may find it useful to consult this collection in conjunction with the Architectural Drawings and Blueprints.

Series 86: Kiamie Mausoleum (Lot 32696)

The Kiamie Mausoleum is located at Lot 32696 of the cemetery. It was designed by Presbrey Leland of 681 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York. The file contains a letter from the architects and builders to the cemetery, a foundation work order and seven (7) blueprints.

Item A: Letter to Green-Wood Cemetery, 1958 July 23

Details: This letter to the cemetery is a cover letter for the enclosure of the plans for the mausoleum. The letter also requests that the foundation be installed.

Size: 7.3” x 10.5”

Drawing Material: Letterhead

Notes/Markings: There are notes written in pencil at the bottom of the plan which outlines the plot and surrounding land. It notes that the front of the vault is facing Garland Avenue. A date of 9/16/58 is handwritten, approving the location of the vault.

Condition: Good. The letter is very creased with wear and tear along the top, but it is still easily readable.

Item B: Foundation Work Order, 1958 September 16

Details: This document gives permission for the foundation to be built and notes when it is completed. A small drawing of the foundation shape and size is drawn in the center of the work order. It also notes that the mausoleum foundation will be a depth of 5ft. The document shows that the work was completed on 10/21/58 and inspected by C. Napoli on 10/22/58.

Drawing Material: Orange Lined Paper

Notes/Markings: The back of the document has pencil written notes, one notes the time it will take and the note underneath that says, “Pour” and the bottom note says, “Clean - 3 men - 10 hours.”

Condition: Very good. There are visible folds in the paper.

Item C: Front Elevation

Scale: ¾” = 1ft.

Details: The main facade of the mausoleum is drawn in this blueprint. Stairs leading up to the entrance way are visible with a Greek Doric style column flanking each side of front door leading into the mausoleum. The front door is made up of two doors with decorative, vertical designs on each. There is a handle on each door. Above the columns are bunting style carvings with a circle design above them. There is a plain block for the bottom layer of the roof with a small slab that is decorated with lines to form squares along the roof.

Notes/Markings: “All Exposed Surfaces Smooth Finish” is written in the top left of the plan.

Condition: Very good. There is a fairly deep horizontal fold line down the center of the plan. The plan itself is a little dirty, but does not affect the readability of the plan at all.

Item D: Plan

Scale: ¾” = 1ft.

Details: This detailed, birds-eye view of the mausoleum outlines the entrance way leading into the mausoleum and the back wall. Two column tops are visible with a gap for the doorway. The interior has a polished granite floor and is split into three rectangles. The back wall has a window frame outlined

Notes/Markings: By the back window a note says, “Bullet Resistant Glass.” The interior floor reads, “Polished Granite Floor.”

Condition: Very good. There is a deep and visible horizontal fold in the center of the plan. There is minor wear and tear around the edges. The plan is also a little dirty. However, overall it is still easily readable.

Item E: Foundation Plan

Scale: ½” = 1ft.

Details: This foundation plan is broken down into three separate plans on this page. Clockwise from the top the “Plan” notes the outline of the foundation and shows in the center where it has not been excavated. The next plan is “Section B-B” and is an enlarged part of the plan which is split into three sections of different sizes. The bottom plan is “Section A-A” and is also an enlarged portion of the foundation.

Notes/Markings: The first plan has a notation that reads, “Top of Foundation 2” Below Grade.”

Condition: Very good. There are visible fold lines both vertically and horizontally down the center of the plan and some creasing. The readability of the plan is not affected at all.

Item F: Transverse Section

Scale: ¾” = 1ft.

Details: Here the floor, sides and walls of the mausoleum are outlined, and their measurements are shown. The center of the mausoleum has six equal sized squares with clear slate on either side of a larger rectangle. The bottom of the rectangle shows a decorative base. Vents are shown on the right side of the plan in the wall.

Condition: Very good. There are visible fold lines both vertically and horizontally through the center of the plan. There is a blue tinge covering the paper but the plan is very readable and clear. Small staple holes are along the left side of the plan.

Item G: Rear Elevation

Details: A large rectangular shaped window is outlined with a thick top and bottom frame is placed in the center of the back wall of the mausoleum. Three large concrete slabs make up the back wall. The roof is flat with a bronze two spouts in it.

Condition: Good. There are staple holes along the left side of the plan and a small hole in the center of the blueprint itself. There are visible fold lines. However, the blueprint it very readable.

Item H: Side Elevation

Scale: ¾” = 1ft.

Details: This view notes the side wall of the mausoleum and the steps up to the entry-way. The main wall structure is split into three large, rectangular slabs. The top and bottom slabs have vents built into them on either side. The flat roof is also noted.

Notes/Markings: The top right vent has a pencil-in note that reads, “SEE F.S.D.”

Condition: Very good. There are small staple holes along the bottom left side and top left side of the blueprint. There are visible fold lines.

Item I: Longitudinal Section

Details: This blueprint shows the inner part of the mausoleum and three burial chambers. Each chamber has two bronze rosettes on either end. To the left side of the plan is one Greek Doric column on the base of the entryway into the mausoleum. There is a step and the foundation also shown. The right side of the plan has the back window outlined as well as the back wall and foundation. The side view of the roof is also outlined with measurements.

Materials Noted: Bronze and marble.

Notes/Markings: The center of the plan reads: “Alabam Cream Marble Highly Pol’d.” Inside the column it is noted: “20 Flutes.” The bottom center under the floor of the mausoleum has a note that reads: “Floor Slopes ¼” to Front.” with an arrow pointing up to the floor.

Condition: Very good. There are folds and creases in the paper and small staple holes along the bottom of the plan, but nothing that affects the readability of the plan.
