Abstract
The Architectural Drawings and Blueprints collection contains over 150 separate series of mausoleum and vault designs, as well as blueprints for the design of the Green-Wood chapel and other historically significant buildings and monuments.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Architectural Drawings and Blueprints collection contains over 150 separate series of designs, each of which has one to around 20 individual drawings. Each series represents designs for a mausoleum or other architectural feature at Green-Wood Cemetery.
Most of the designs are for private family mausoleums, although the collection also includes blueprint materials for the historic Green-Wood chapel designed by Warren & Wetmore, alterations made to the Fifth Avenue gate, and plans for the mid-twentieth-century Columbarium. Other notable features in the collection include the Higgins mausoleum series, which contains photographs and early designs of the famous Battle Hill monument Altar to Liberty: Minerva by sculptor F. Wellington Ruxell. Many additional series may include more famous names in New York City history, such as those for the Cooper-Hewitt family and the Torrio family.
The majority of these drawings are printed on large blueprint paper, although there are a significant number of series that contain original drawings on tracing paper or drafting linen, as well as prints on Mylar, photocopy paper, or other reproduction materials. Many series also contain specifications documents—legal agreements between the architectural firm and the cemetery, which outline the plans, materials, and workman regulations for construction. In some cases, there is additional material, such as correspondence with lot owners and alternate mausoleum designs.
The collection’s dates range from the 1880s to the 1990s; the majority of the mausoleum designs were created between 1910 and 1930, at a time when it was widely popular among upper-class families to have a mausoleum or vault in which to inter their deceased relatives. Many architects of the time specialized in mausoleum design. Architectural firms that produced a large number of mausoleum designs in this collection include the Presbrey-Leland Monument Company, John Feitner Architects, and the Harrison Granite Company.
Researchers may wish to consult a specific series, which can give an interesting insight into the family in question, or they may wish to look at multiple series in the collection, in order to gain an example of the way construction and design aesthetics changed over time. The collection is a particularly valuable example of the way cemetery architecture developed in its golden years, particularly because many of the wealthiest and most prestigious New York families chose to be interred at Green-Wood.
The collection is currently stored in two locations—some material is in the Green-Wood archives, while many other blueprints are kept in the surveyor’s office of the administrative building. The container list has additional information on each item in this significant and highly variable collection, including notes on the date of designs, the architectural firm that created the drawings, and information on the size, condition, markings, and design features of each piece. All blueprint materials have been scanned and are digitally available; a preview of the image file is attached to each item. High-resolution images of each scan are available upon request.
The material is in varying condition, and embrittled drawings have been encapsulated in Mylar to ensure preservation.
The Green-Wood archives hold additional records acquired from the Presbrey-Leland Monument Company relating to Green-Wood Cemetery, and researchers may find it useful to consult this collection in conjunction with the Architectural Drawings and Blueprints.

- Series 78: Kohl Mausoleum (Lot 37615)
- The Kohl Mausoleum is located at Lot 37615, and was designed and built in 1938 by Farrington Gould & Hoagland Memorial Corporation of 258 Broadway, New York, New York. The file contains one letter from the designer and builder to the Green-Wood Cemetery Superintendent. There are 9 blueprints in the file.
- Folder 1: 9 Drawings and 1 Document
- Item A: Letter to Green-Wood from Designer, 1938 August 11
Details: This letter is written by Farrington Gould & Hoagland to Green-Wood regarding the location of the mausoleum. The builders find the location to be “satisfactory.”
Size: 8.5” x 11”
Drawing Material: Blueprint
Notes/Markings: There is a “received” stamp on the back of the letter by Green-Wood on August 12, 1938.
Condition: Very good. There are 3 visible fold in the paper but they do not affect the letter at all which remains in very good condition.
- Item B: Front Elevation, 1938 February 23
Scale: ¾” = 1ft.
Details: This plan shows the front of the mausoleum. It is a beautifully ornate design with the very edges of the mausoleum edges flanked by two large urns. Between the urns and the doorway are thick, joined pillars. There four stairs leading up to the outer entranceway which has two fluted columns on each side of the front door. Above the entranceway, behind the columns are decorative, hand-carved buntings/ornaments. Above this, and above where the column tops end is the lintel with the family name carved into a rectangle in block letters. On either side of the name is a square decorative carving. Atop that, on the first section of the roof, around the entire mausoleum is a carved banner with separate squares. One has a star, one has a moon, one is a planet and the pattern repeats. The roof of the mausoleum is flat and made up of thick, large slabs with smaller slabs atop that.
Size: 27.6” x 20.5”
Drawing Material: Blueprint
Notes/Markings: “hand carved ornament” is written above the bunting.
Condition: Very good. There is minor wear and tear around the edges. The top right corner has a long fold line that is deep-set into the page, but does not affect the blueprint’s readability.
- Item C: General Plan, 1938 February 21
Scale: ¾” = 1ft.
Details: This plan offers a bird’s eye view of the mausoleum from the entrance to the inside and back. A bronze front door is noted with two sarcophagi noted on the left side which has slate linings and granite floors between them as well as brick work around them. Also between the two sarcophagi is an Altar against the wall. The left side of the plan has four catacombs. At the back of the catacombs is a closet for lower containers, this is made of slate. This closet has a bronze door. The back wall has an area for a window carved out
Size: 27.7” x 20.8”
Drawing Material: Blueprint
Materials Noted: Granite, brick, slate and bronze.
Notes/Markings: On the center of the floor it says, “Polished Barre Granite Floor.”
Condition: Very good. There is minimal wear and tear around the edges, with the top of the blueprint having some tears in the page. There are also staple holes along the left side. The plan has a deep fold line on the left side of the page.
- Item D: Foundation Plan (2 copies), 1938 August 4
Scale: ½” = 1ft.
Details: This blueprint is made up of 4 blueprints outlining the foundation. The top left side of the page is the floor layout for the main inner mausoleum and how it is divided up. The top right plan is named “Section B.B” and it lays out more of the foundation of the mausoleum. The bottom left plan is named, “SECTION A.A” and takes a section of the first plan and expands upon it. The last plan on the bottom right side is the “Isometric View” of the mausoleum.
Size: 27” x 21”
Drawing Material: Blueprint
Materials Noted: Concrete
Notes/Markings: The back of the plan has pencil markings which say, “13384 yds” and below that it says, “3613.68 cu. ft.”

A window cut out is visible in the center of this blueprint, which is the back window. A view of two columns is also visible; they are ornate with decorative capitals, and above that there is an ornamental frieze. On the bottom right of the plan is the side of the altar with a sand carved frieze above it. The floor is shown along with a granite interpiece. The top of the plan is the flat, slab roof. The bottom is the foundation.
