The publications of the Green-Wood Cemetery were created and distributed as a way to provide visitors with information that was both portable and convenient so that they could keep the guide or map with them throughout their visit to the cemetery grounds. In the foreword of “A Handbook for Green-Wood (1873),” the author N. Cleaveland, stated that “the aim [of the manual] is to point out the objects of greatest attraction and to aid the visitor in finding them.”
These publications were handed out to visitors upon entering the cemetery as a way to better guide them throughout the cemetery and for Green-Wood to remain active in the Brooklyn community. Within this series, researchers will find publications of maps, historical guides, handbooks to the cemetery, and information on the chapel. The date range of this series is from 1843-1973, with the bulk dates ranging from 1853-1884.
