Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Ivy Removal Photographs series is comprised of black-and-white snapshots taken of lots in Green-Wood Cemetery which illustrate the maintenance and/or removal of plant life that had recently been performed. Each photograph is stamped with a date and a brief description of what type of maintenance has been done to the lot’s plants. Additional handwritten notes record the lot number, its location, and, in many cases, the name of the lot owner and additional information regarding the lot.

The Overgrown Ivy Photographs subseries is comprised of black-and-white snapshots taken of lots in Green-Wood Cemetery which illustrate overgrown plant life within the lots and on graves. The majority of the photographs are organized by lot number, some include stamped or handwritten information: date, brief description of plants, name related to the lot or grave, and perpetual care number.

Some photographs within the subseries do not have a lot number or date. A group of the photographs without lot numbers labeled “Millionaires Row” (1976) illustrates plant overgrowth in section 111 and 124 of Green-Wood Cemetery. Photo examples and a map of “Millionaires Row” are included.
