Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains legal documents pertaining to the land and property of Green-Wood Cemetery. It includes abstracts of title, deeds (indenture, quitclaim, foreclosure, etc.), correspondence, wills, legal opinion and response documents, maps, tax records, and other miscellaneous documents. Three of the series pertain to land owned by specific people or families: Henry E. Pierrepont, the Murphy family, and the Bergen family. The documents are primarily dated between 1820 and 1934.

This series contains abstracts of title, land deeds, and correspondence regarding land acquired by Green-Wood Cemetery’s founding president Henry E. Pierrepont. The majority of land described in these legal documents is located on the border of Green-Wood and the neighborhood of Flatbush. These documents are arranged in their original order with the addition of two folders of pertaining documents.
