Superintendent's Labor Accounts, 1885-1908
[Back to Formatted Version]
Brief Description: The Superintendent's Labor Accounts series includes four bound, manuscript volumes of detailed records that list the employee and contractor labor expenses at Green-Wood Cemetery from 1885 to 1891 and 1894 to 1908. The labor accounts document over two decades of individuals and companies that were associated with the maintenance or construction of grounds, monuments, and mausoleums at Green-Wood Cemetery. The tables and written notes indicate the employee or contractor, date, days of labor, rate of pay, amount paid, lot number (with corresponding name of lot owner), and additional materials used in the labor. Although the records vary between daily, weekly, and monthly work periods, they nonetheless provide an account of the nature of the labor, compensation for the work, people involved, materials used in maintaining the cemetery, and, in some cases, the reason maintenance was required. Each volume is approximately 550 pages and includes indexes that list the names and pages where specific employees and contractors can be found. Despite the deterioration of the bindings, the volumes remain intact. The verso of front and back cover boards on each volume contained loose notes and correspondence that are associated with one or more of the records. Additionally, loose notes and correspondence were also enclosed or bound between pages in certain volumes. All loose items have been removed and stored in folders with notes indicating the original location.
